Venice
Venice is one of the few cities on Florida's west coast that is not separated from the Gulf by a barrier island. Preserving the original character of Venice, the city created the Historic Venice District and an Architectural Review Board to ensure that new construction or modification of existing buildings conform to the northern Italian renaissance style of the city's original architecture. Designation as a Florida Main Street City by the state further assures that Venice's heritage will be preserved. Today's Venice is shaped by a rich heritage. Originally called Horse and Chaise because of a carriage-like tree formation that marked the spot for fishermen, the city acquired its present name in 1888 from settler Frank Higel, considered the "Father of Venice," because of its likeness to the canal city in Italy where he spent his childhood. The City of Venice was incorporated in 1927 and the dream of a model community became a reality when homes & businesses featuring Italian architecture were constructed. The Intracoastal Waterway was constructed in the 1960's, making Venice an "island" and increasing pleasure boating in the area. Business, culture and natural beauty all await newcomers to this part of the Gulf Coast and all of Florida. The south county area stands out as one of the most desirable spots - not too citified, still with much rural charm, yet with the facilities needed for comfortable living and a great place to open businesses and raise families. When you experience Venice, you experience a quality of life beyond compare. It possesses a quiet charm, relaxed ambiance and a natural beauty unlike any other. Fourteen miles of beach front ensure fine shelling, sharks tooth hunting and baby turtle nest watching...besides the sunning, swimming, boating, fishing and water sports. There is an informality about living here that is contagious. People can go almost anywhere all year in shorts. Friends are made easily and the atmosphere is right for sharing interests with new people. Shoppers can spend the day on the palm tree-lined avenues of the historic downtown area and visit many fine restaurants within walking distance. This scenic stretch of Sarasota County coastline basks in the sun most of the year and temperatures seldom drop below 70 degrees. All of this combined makes Venice a great place to live and the reason you should make Venice your home. We love Venice, and you will too!! |
